JCSU basketball keeps rolling
It was another good evening for Johnson C. Smith University basketball. The undefeated women team ran its record to 10-0 against Lincoln University, while the men (8-4) picked up their sixth straight victory, also against Lincoln.
Both games were played in Charlotte’s Grady Cole Center.
In the men’s game, JCSU led from start to finish and came away with a 69-61 win. Facing a Lincoln team that had won only one game this season, the Golden Bulls were up 42-23 with only a minute to play in the first half.
Lincoln outscored JCSU 13-0 in the opening four minutes of the second half but never took the lead.
“We lost our composure for a while in the second half, but our guards played well tonight...,” JCSU head coach Stephen Joyner Sr. said afterward. “The weather placed some restrictions on our practice schedule, but it’s good we managed to get the victory.”
Sophomore guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) and junior guard James Otey (Roanoke, VA) combined for 46 points and 10 rebounds. Parks had 29 points, four assists, and four rebounds, including 11-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line. Otey contributed with 17 points, six boards, and three steals.
In the women’s game, the Lady Golden Bulls fell behind early but rallied to a 68-57 victory. They jumped out to a 30-21 half-time lead against a Lincoln team that finished the night 1-9 on the season.
Junior guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) led the way for JCSU with 12 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Senior guard Shakeena Cunningham (Buffalo, NY) and junior guard Shavonda Price (Ft. Wayne, IN) both chipped in 11 points. Senior center Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) produced eight points, 10 rebounds, and four steals. And Junior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) and senior guard Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) each scored eight points to round out the top scorers.
Both JCSU teams will be back in action Thursday in a CIAA matchup against St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, VA.
