JCSU basketball off to a good start
It was a great weekend for Johnson C. Smith University basketball. Both the men’s and women’s teams emerged unbeaten in early season play.
The Lady Golden Bulls improved to 4-0 after going unbeaten in the 2010 Queen City Classic: They defeated Pheiffer University 66-64 on Saturday then handled Wingate University on Sunday with a 60-55 win.
The women will next play Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup inside Brayboy Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The JCSU women already have beaten Queens once this season -- a 62-54 victory on Nov. 17 at Ovens Athletic Center.
On the men’s side, the Golden Bulls on Saturday opened their season with a 78-72 win over Washington Adventist University on Day 1 of the Claude Saunders/Wendy’s JCSU Tip-off Classic inside Brayboy Gymnasium. They followed up on Sunday with a 103-83 win over Newberry College on Day 2 of the tournament.
The men will now travel to Milwaukee, WI, over the Thanksgiving holiday for the 2010 Fresh Coast Classic. JCSU will square off against Bowie State University on Friday at 2 p.m. on the campus of Wisconsin Lutheran College. Saturday’s schedule is contingent on the outcome of Friday’s games.
