JCSU falls 48-13 to Shaw
The Johnson C. Smith University football team lost to Shaw University 48-13 Saturday, dropping to 1-5 on the season.
The Golden Bulls found themselves trailing 17-0 midway through the second quarter. The team’s only first-half score came when Shaw blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown by JCSU redshirt freshman offensive lineman George Orr (Brunson, SC).
Shaw went up 38-7 before JCSU scored again – a 27-yard strike from senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte) to senior receiver Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) to cap a 76-yard drive in the forth quarter.
The rest of the game belonged to the Shaw Bears.
The Raleigh team dominated on offense, generating 491 total yards and earning 28 first downs, compared with 275 yards and 13 first downs for Johnson C. Smith.
Carter completed 12 of 36 passes for 228 yards with one TD and one interception. Junior quarterback Jamell Clarke (East Point, GA) led the team in rushing with a 22-yard run off a fake punt attempt. Freshman receiver Avius Capers (Charlotte) had a team-high four catches for 92 yards.
Shaw running back Raymond Williams rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Kevin Atkins threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns.
With Saturday’s victory, the Bears improved to 4-2 overall, 3-0 in the conference, and 2-0 in the division. JCSU is 0-3 in the CIAA, and 0-2 in the Southern Division.
The Golden Bulls travel to Richmond on Saturday to play the 1-5 Panthers of Virginia Union University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
