JCSU falls to Virginia Union 44-21
Johnson C. Smith University enters its homecoming week after suffering another tough football loss.
The Golden Bulls fell Saturday to Virginia Union University 44-21, dropping to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union scored first after blocking a punt by junior punter Tyler Rabb (Shelby, NC) at the JCSU two-yard line. After three plays, the Panthers found the end zone but missed the extra point.
With four minutes left in the first quarter, Virginia Union scored after another blocked punt, this time recovered at the JCSU one-yard line, but failed to connect on a two-point conversion attempt.
Before the first quarter ended, the Golden Bulls completed a nine-play, 69-yard drive with a touchdown. Sophomore running back Joshua James (Varnville, SC) scored on a three-yard rush, and the Golden Bulls trailed 12-7.
JCSU would not score another touchdown until the third quarter. By that time, Virginia Union had scored three more TDs, all with a failed extra point attempt. Up 30-14, the Panthers produced more points after a 22-yard touchdown run from Jeremy Washington.
Each teams scored one additional TD to account for the final score. One of those scores was a two-yard run by JCSU senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) with 8:09 remaining.
Turnovers plagued J.C. Smith: Carter threw three interceptions and JCSU lost one of two fumbles
This week’s homecoming matchup is against St. Augustine’s College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
