Joseph Jones, an assistant professor of political science at Johnson C. Smith University and a frequent commentary writer on Qcitymetro.com, has been named the inaugural director of the Social Justice Initiative at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark.

Jones is a 2000 graduate of Philander and completed his master’s and doctorate in political science at Clark Atlanta University. He also served as a Lina McCord Black College Fund ambassador for the United Methodist Church and has studied in South Africa.

Jones served on Philander’s social justice advisory board and helped develop the school’s Social Justice “Think Justice” initiative. As director, he will be responsible for fundraising, programs and policies and will launch the school’s Social Justice Center.

As a Qcitymetro contributor, Jones wrote most frequently about social justice issues. He called his new job “a dream come true.”

Thirteen CMS seniors were surprised last week with news that they had won a collective $250,000 in college scholarships from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.

The students received the scholarships because CMS was a 2010 finalist for the Broad Prize, the nation's largest education award honoring large urban districts that have demonstrated the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among income and ethnic groups.

Unlike some traditional scholarships that are awarded only to top-tier students, Broad Prize scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who have a demonstrated record of improving their grades over the course of their high school career and have a financial need.

Students who received the scholarships are:
