JCSU senior wins Penn Relays event
Leford Green, a senior at Johnson C. Smith University, won the college men’s 400-meter hurdles championship at the 2011 Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Green, a native of Jamaica, had the best time (50.00) out of seven sections and 60 runners. He finished second in the event last year.
"It was windy condition, but I just executed my race plan,” Green was quoted as saying in a university press release. "It was my best time for the season. I can't complain. I was happy with it. I would have liked a 49, but its 9 o'clock in the morning. I'll take it.”
The 4x100 men’s team of sophomore Gabriel Franklin (Casselberry, FL), Green, sophomore Winston Brown (St. Andrew, Jamaica), and sophomore Akino Ming (Portland, Jamaica) finished second in heat, one behind a team from Texas A&M (40.06) with a time of 41.50. With nine other heats and 83 total teams, JCSU ranked 20th overall with their time.
That same squad, with Green running the anchor leg, won the third heat (3:07.44) of the men’s 4x400. The team had the third-fastest time, behind Texas A&M (2nd place - 3:07.29), and LSU (1st place – 3:07.22).
Sophomore Rolston Gabriel had a time of 14.59 in men’s 100-meter hurdles for 20th overall.
Senior Shermaine Williams (St. Catherine, Jamaica) ranked 13th with her time of 13.82 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles. Williams was sixth in the first heat of three.
