Johnson C. Smith University recognized the athletic and academic accomplishments of its student-athletes Monday at its annual Athletic Banquet inside the Grimes Lounge.

Demetria Bell and Leford Green received the Pettis Norman Award as female and male student-athletes of the year.

Bell, a senior, was the only Lady Golden Bull named to 2009-10 All-CIAA basketball team this year. She finished the season ranked 3rd in the CIAA in rebounding (averaging 7.9 per game) and 8th in field goal percentage (46.1%).

Bell was named Preseason All-CIAA this season and recorded four double-doubles. She played in 23 games and started 22. She produced 955 points and 866 rebounds in her four-year career at JCSU.

Bell has been a dean’s list scholar at the school for the past three years. She was elected Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president and chosen to be a women’s basketball team captain. In addition, she serves the community through efforts at Habitat for Humanity and through projects with her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. She is also a Spanish tutor at Johnson C. Smith and was a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award this year.

Green, a junior, earned his third All-American honors in NCAA indoor track and field. He established a new personal best in the 200 meter and the fastest collegiate performance in the nation (20.41 seconds).

This season, Green has produced automatic qualifying times for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400 meter. He opened his outdoor season with a brisk 45.88 seconds to smash the Aggie Relay meet record. The time is an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and leads Division II qualifiers. The time is fourth across all divisions.

At the CIAA Outdoor Championships, Leford Green was named Championship MVP for the second consecutive season. Equally impressive, he holds a 3.9 GPA and is majoring in Information Systems Engineering.

JCSU senior Jason Stuckey (Men’s Tennis) and junior Nikki Boston (Women's Track & Field/Cross Country) received the Coca-Cola Academic Award as the male and female senior student-athletes with the highest grade point average.

Stuckey, who has a 4.0 GPA and is a business administration major, competed all season in No. 1 singles and doubles with partner and co-captain Hutcherson. He ended his 2010 campaign 16-9 and 9-3 in the CIAA for singles action. Stuckey is ranked 2nd in the CIAA for number one singles leaders and 10th for all singles.
He was one of three All-CIAA selections from the Golden Bulls tennis team. Stuckey led JCSU to the finals match in the 2010 CIAA Championships. He also has excelled as a broadcaster for the JCSU communications department.

Boston, who holds a 3.94 GPA, earned All-American honors in Indoor Track and Field for the 4x400m relay and 400-meter hurdles events. She is currently ranked second in NCAA Division II for the 400-meter hurdles and achieved an automatic qualifying time (60.67) for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Boston represented the JCSU Department of Computer Science and Engineering with her NASA project on Modeling of Catalyst: GaussView/Gaussivan03 Modeling of Fischer-Tropsch Reaction. Despite having another year of athletic eligibility, Boston has earned enough academic credits to complete her degree as an early graduate.
