JCSU homecoming ends with 34-24 loss to St. Augustine's
Johnson C. Smith University lost its homecoming game 34-24 to Saint Augustine’s College on Saturday.
The loss dropped the Golden Bulls to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the CIAA, while the Falcons improve to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
After winning the toss, St. Augustine’s marched 59 yards in eight plays for a touchdown -- a 13-yard run by CIAA rushing leader Walter Sanders.
The Golden Bulls went three and out on their first offensive drive, and Sanders scored a second touchdown for the Falcons on a 45-yard run.
Trailing 14-0, JCSU senior receiver Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) ran 67 yards on a Falcons kickoff before he was tackled 21 yards shy of the end zone. But senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) threw an interception for his only turnover of the game. The Falcons returned the ball 50 yards.
Two plays later, the Falcons went up 21-0.
St. Augustine’s scored again when Sanders ran for his third touchdown.
JCSU’s only first-half points came on a 33-yard field goal near the end of the second quarter.
The Golden Bulls held St. Augustine’s scoreless in the third while scoring two touchdowns of their own – a six-yard pass to freshman receiver Avius Capers (Charlotte) and a seven-yard toss to Franklin.
After 17 unanswered points, the Gold Bulls were tailing 28-17.
A homecoming comeback, however, was not to be: St. Aug scored its final touchdown on a 14-play, 60-yard drive that chewed up 6:12 minutes. JCSU found the end zone once more for the final score of 34-24.
JCSU’s next opponent is division rival Fayetteville State University. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. in Fayetteville.
