The Johnson C. Smith University football team fell to 1-4 on the year Saturday after losing to Winston-Salem State University 49-3.

The Rams, meanwhile, remain undefeated at 6-0.

The game opened with promise for the Golden Bulls, who put together an 11-play opening drive to reach Winston-Salem State’s two-yard line. But after three consecutive rushing attempts -- including a fourth-down attempt -- JCSU failed to enter the end zone.

Both teams stalled on their next offensive series.

The Rams eventually put together eight plays for a 90-yard drive, which resulted in the game’s first scoring – a one-yard run by WSSU’s Nicholas Cooper.

The first half ended with JCSU trailing 28-0.

The Golden Bulls finally got on the board in the third quarter with a 22-yard field goal from junior placekicker Tyler Rabb (Shelby, NC).

Winston-Salem produced 491 yards of total offense, including 202 on the ground.

On the JCSU side, senior quarterback Ryan Carter (Charlotte, NC) had his worse statistical game of the season, completing 18 of 32 for 155 yards and two interceptions. Senior receiver Jeremy Franklin (Casselberry, FL) had five catches for 37 yards, followed by freshman receiver Chrishawn Rhyne (Winston-Salem, NC) with three grabs for 35 yards.

Carter led his team in rushing with 50 yards on the ground; the Golden Bulls had just 69 total rushing yards.

Junior linebacker Quinton Toomer (Atlanta, GA) led the team in tackles with 10 (9 solo) and one tackle for a loss of five yards. Junior defensive back Darius Johnson (Atlanta, GA) collected eight tackles for JCSU.

The Golden Bulls return to Irwin Belk Complex for their next CIAA contest against Shaw University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. JCSU will recognize its sponsors and faculty/staff in an appreciation day.
