JCSU women advance in NCAA regionals
The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional semifinals Friday with a 74-69 victory over Glenville State College.
It was the first regional win in the history of the JCSU women’s program. The Lady Golden Bulls next play No. 3 seed West Liberty State College at 5 p.m. Saturday.
JCSU entered the tournament, in Edinboro, PA, as the No. 2 seed with a season record of 24-4.
LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) and Racquel Davis (Bamberg, Germany) had early production to help get J.C. Smith off to a good start. All-Rookie freshman Davis had a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds at the break. All-CIAA junior Gamble contributed with 10 points, seven boards, and four steals at the break.
Johnson C. Smith sealed the victory with sound free-throw shooting from senior guards Shakeena Cunningham (Buffalo, NY) and Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD). Both went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line in the final seconds.
“No team gets to this level if they aren’t a good team, so we feel privileged to be able to represent our university and conference in a winning matter,” said JCSU head coach and reigning CIAA Coach of the Year Vanessa Taylor.
