The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team advanced to the CIAA semifinals Tuesday night with a 71-52 win over Chowan.

JCSU improves to 23-3 overall and will next play Bowie State University.

The Lady Golden Bulls opened the game with a 17-2 run and was threatened only once by a Chowan team that previously had won only one CIAA tournament game – a 56-53 victory over Livingstone College on Monday.

Junior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) finished with 15 points, 12 of them in the first half. Junior guard Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) scored all nine of her points in the opening period, while junior guard and All-CIAA selection LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) added 10 points.

Quattlebaum was named MVP.

“I'm extremely proud of our team effort,” said Golden Bulls coach Vanessa Taylor, the CIAA Coach of the Year. “We just shot the ball extremely well in the first half.”

Bowie State, JCSU’s semifinals opponent, advanced by knocking off Winston-Salem State 63-56. The semifinal game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.

Other Tuesday Games:

SHAW 73, VIRGINIA STATE 53:
Demaria Liles, a 6-1 forward, produced a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Lady Bears (19-11), who scored 34 points off 31 VSU turnovers. Jackie Sanders, a 6-3 forward, came off the bench to score 12 points, while Kyria Buford and Brittney Spencer added 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Lady Bears, the No. 2 Southern Division seed. Shaw advanced to Friday's semifinal to play Saint Augustine's College at 1 p.m.

BOWIE STATE 63, WINSTON-SALEM STATE 56:

Chanita Jordan, who averages just 8.3 points per game, scored seven in a span of 50 seconds midway through the second half in Bowie State’s win Tuesday. The 6-foot-4 junior center from Philadelphia led the No. 2 seed from the CIAA North with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. When Winston-Salem State (17-11) managed to trim the deficit to 10 points with less than 6 minutes remaining, Jordan swatted away back-to-back shots to help the Lady Bulldogs (18-9) secure the win. Bowie State plays Johnson C. Smith in the semifinals on Friday at 3 p.m.

ST. AUGUSTINE’S 70, ELIZABETH CITY STATE 68:
With Tuesday’s win Saint Augustine's College advanced to semifinals for the second time in three years. Down 13 points late and seemingly headed for defeat, the Lady Falcons staged a comeback to win by 2. The win avenged last year's first-round loss to ESC in the tournament. Senior guard Crystal McCaffity (Havelock, N.C.) scored a career-high 19 points, including a career-high six 3-pointers. Her 3-point shooting (6-for-10) single-handedly kept the Lady Falcons in the game. St. Augustine’s will play its arch rival Shaw in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday.
