JCSU womens basketball team cracks USA Today/ESPN poll
The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team has cracked the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 women’s basketball poll.
The Lady Golden Bulls received 56 points and came in ranked 25 in week 12. The team is currently 19-1 overall, 11-1 in the CIAA, and 5-0 in their division.
This marks the second straight season that the JCSU women’s team has made the top-25 ranking. They peaked at No. 18 during the 2009-10 season.
The team won its first 11 games before losing to Virginia State University on Jan. 15. Since then, they have won eight straight. The Lady Golden Bulls are 9-0 in road games and ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region this week.
“This is another testament to the hard work my coaching staff and players have put forth this season,” head coach Vanessa Taylor said in a statement. “We want to continue to stay focused and work towards our goals; and of course thank our administration, student body, and our alums for their support.”
The USA TODAY ESPN board of coaches is made up of 30 head coaches at Division II schools. All are members of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association JCSU is the only CIAA team ranked in the poll.
The JCSU women next face Saint Augustine's College on Saturday, February 12, in Raleigh. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
