The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team defeated Elizabeth City State University 68-47 Saturday to remain undefeated (3-0) in the CIAA. Their overall record improved to 9-3.

The Lady Golden Bulls opened slowly, allowing ECSU to grab an 11-4 lead in the first four minutes before JCSU fought back to take a 14-12 lead at the nine-minute mark.

Senior guard LaQwesha Gamble finished the night with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Terran Quattlebaum had 11 points and two steals off the bench. Sophomore center Racquel Davis controlled the post for the Golden Bulls, producing 10 points, eight rebounds, and a block.

JCSU men stumble in loss

The JCSU men’s team lost to ECSU 65-56 and fell to 6-6 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.

The JCSU men didn’t score their first points until five minutes into the game, allowing ECSU to take a 12-3 lead at the 14:45 mark. The Golden Bulls eventually fought back with a 13-3 scoring run to tie the game at 16-16, but a season-low 25 points in the second half doomed the team.

“Surprisingly, we showed a lack of mental focus tonight,” said head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. “We didn’t come out an execute our game, we only made eight field goals in the second half and shot 30 percent for the game; that’s just not like us.”

Both JSCU teams play Lincoln University today in what will be the first of a four-game conference road stretch. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., the men at 7:30 p.m.
