JCSU women's basketball team slips in latest poll
The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team is ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Region poll, down a spot from the previous week.
The team is 20-2 overall after a 63-57 victory over Shaw University on Valentine’s Day. The Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College were ranked No. 10.
Teams occupying the top eight spots at season’s ends play in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

The school will retire the basketball jerseys of former players Dante Johnson and Angela Hamilton during a special ceremony Monday, February 21.
Johnson, a native of Summerton, SC, played for JCSU from 1983 to 1987. He is ranked fourth all-time in scoring and holds the school record for best field goal percentage in a single season (68%).
Hamilton (1985-1989) came to JCSU from Rutherfordton, NC. During four seasons she scored 1,852 points and pulled down 1,223 rebounds -- first all-time in both categories. She also holds the JCSU record for most field goals made (career) with 742.
The ceremony will take place in between the men’s and women’s games when JCSU hosts St. Augustine’s College -- the season’s final home games of the local teams. Game times are slated for 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m.).

On Saturday, February 19, the JCSU Athletic Department will recognize the 2000-2001 men’s basketball team for being the first in school history to win a CIAA Tournament championship.
The Golden Bulls finished that season 27-5 overall, 14-2 in the CIAA, and was crowned Western Division champions. They advanced through the South Atlantic Regionals with victories over Wingate (92-60) and Winston-Salem State (64-52). They earned a spot in the Elite Eight played in Bakersfield, Calif., before losing to Washburn University (70-64).
The ceremony will take place between the men’s and women’s games when JCSU hosts Winston Salem State. The women’s team is set to play at 5:30 p.m.
