JCSU women remain perfect; men drop fourth straight
The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team is a perfect 6-0 after defeating Belmont Abbey College 68-56 Saturday. The men, meanwhile, dropped their fourth in a row, also against Belmont Abbey.
Both games were played in JCSU’s Brayboy Gymnasium.
On the JCSU women’s roster, senior center Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) finished with a team-high 11 points with seven rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Chante’ Bell (Fayetteville, NC) and junior guard Shavonda Price (Ft. Wayne, IN) followed with 10 points and nine, respectively. Junior guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) was one point shy of her fifth double-double with nine points, 12 rebounds and four steals.
The outcome was more disappointing for the JCSU men, who lost 62-56. The team made only eight field goals in the second half, shooting 33% (8-15).
Four JCSU men had double figures: Sophomore guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) scored 16, senior guard Ronald Thornhill (Alberta, VA) chipped 11, while sophomore center Delonta Boyd (Washington, D.C.) and junior forward Michael Cooper (New Rochelle, NY) each scored 10.
“I was disappointed in our execution in the second half, and we simply ran out of gas,” JCSU head coach Stephen Joyner Sr. said after the game. “Our conditioning needs some work, and hopefully our players will demonstrate the focus needed to improve.”
Both teams begin CIAA play on Monday, Dec. 13, at home against St. Paul’s College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.
