JCSU women remain unbeaten
The Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team picked up its eighth straight victory Thursday with a 57-54 win against Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C.
The Lady Golden Bulls improved to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA. The Hawks dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
With both teams showing signs of rust after the long holiday break, Chowan jumped out to a 21-13 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the half, but JCSU rattled off eight unanswered points to tie the game at 21. The teams went into their respective locker rooms tied 25-25.
The game stayed close throughout the second half. Chowan had a chance to tie the game as time expired but missed a three-point attempt.
Senior guard Shakeena Cunningham (Buffalo, NY), junior guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL), and senior guard Shontanette Shaw (Raeford, NC) each scored a team-high 10 points for Johnson C. Smith. Senior center Brittane Neely (Arlington, VA) nearly closed in on a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Golden Bulls continues their conference road swing on Saturday, January 8, against Elizabeth City State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
