Judge exits forum after clash
Mecklenburg Chief District Court Judge Lisa Bell left an NAACP political candidates' forum under police protection Thursday night after a heated confrontation with a woman who attended.
The woman, Sharon Bennett, said she was upset about a family court ruling Bell made years ago. The encounter was reported in today’s Charlotte Observer.
The confrontation happened about 6:30 p.m. at Little Rock AME Zion Church in uptown.
As 50 or so people mingled with the candidates for judgeships and district attorney, Bennett walked up to Bell waving a photo of her son, Adam, who died last year in China at age 20, the Observer reported.
The two sides disagree about what happened next: Bennett said she simply asked the judge questions about a ruling she'd made in a case involving Bennett's family. Bell says Bennett accused her of killing Adam.
Bell left the church under police escort after NAACP officials refused to evict Bennett from the event.
Bennett is one of a number of litigants who have accused family court judges of bias. In some instances they have sought to unseat certain judges, including Bell, by recruiting candidates to run against them.
