Anthony Earmond Marcus was sentenced Monday to life in prison without parole for killing a woman who tried to help two men she through were having car trouble.

Olivia Sigmon, 52, who has been dubbed a Good Samaritan, was gunned down in front of her daughter on July 3, 2004.

Police say Marcus shot Sigmon after he crashed a stolen car at the intersection of Tuckaseegee and Berryhill roads and Sigmon, returning from a trip to Carowinds, stopped to assist.

Superior Court Judge Jesse Caldwell on Monday called the crimes "senseless, shocking and outrageous," according to the Charlotte Observer. He gave Marcus, 27, an additional 43 years for his kidnapping and robbery convictions.

Sigmon's daughter, Jessica Tarlton, 17, spoke to Marcus before his sentencing, saying:

"Anthony Earmond Marcus - in a blink of an eye, you took the best thing in my life away...and I will never get her back...You shot and killed my mom in front of me when I was 11 years old, and my life has not - and will not - ever be the same.
