Levine Museum presents annual MLK Day celebration
On Sunday and Monday, Jan. 15-16, Levine Museum of the New South will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration. Open with free admission both days, the Levine has programs and activities planned to honor Dr. King's legacy and in conjunction with the “Courage” and “New Courage” exhibits.
Held annually since 2007, the museum's MLK Day Community Celebration draws a capacity crowd, historically attracting the largest single-day attendance of the year at the museum, with as many as 3,600 visitors.
Now in its final weeks, “Courage” has been on display at the museum since January 2011. It portrays the story behind the Supreme Court's landmark school desegregation decision Brown v. Board of Education. After a year at the Levine (with related programming), the exhibit will close on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012.
In addition, all are invited to experience “New Courage,” the recently opened exhibit featuring the work of local high school students.
In addition to the exhibits, Levine Museum's MLK Day Community Celebration will feature Civil Rights-focused films, story time for young children, dance, drumming and music performances. Partners and program participants include: Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, St. Paul's Missionary Baptist, Create Don't Hate/UNC Charlotte Hip Hop Theatre, the Real Orchestra, CPCC, the McCorey YMCA and WAXN.
Admission is free on Sunday from noon-4 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Due to the expected number of visitors, tickets will be issued throughout each day on an hourly schedule.
