Library board votes to close 3 branches
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library board voted Thursday to close three branches -- Belmont Center, Carmel branch and Checkit Outlet -- by June 19.
Faced with losing half its $17.7 million budget because of projected county shortfalls, the board also voted to merge the library's security and maintenance services with those of the county.
And more cuts may be coming.
Libraries Director Charles Brown said he'll meet with county officials next month to make a case for restoring $5 million, the Charlotte Observer reported. Without that money, he said, the library board may have to close about a dozen more branches by July 1, along with slashing 200 jobs.
