Frances C. Peterson, a 1961 graduate of Livingstone College, has established a

Frances C. Peterson

scholarship there for students who show academic success, financial need and leadership potential.

A Frances C. Peterson Scholarship will be awarded each year through 2016 to four Livingstone students. Sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible.

The money will cover tuition, room and board, institutional fees, books, supplies, personal computers and opportunities for cultural leadership development.

Peterson, who grew up in Council, N.C., and is one of 11 children, said money is not the most important part of the award.

“I want the students to know they’ll always have somebody they can call on,” she said in a statement released by the college.

Peterson earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963 and a doctorate in social welfare policy, planning and administration from City University of New York.
In the 1970s she helped establish social work education at City University. During her 36-year tenure at there, she served as director of the social work program and also chaired the Department of Social Sciences.

Livingstone President Jimmy R. Jenkins Sr. said Peterson has a long history of supporting the school.

“It’s really hard to adequately describe what Dr. Peterson means to Livingstone College and the impact her charitable contributions are having and will continue to have here,” Jenkins said. “…The four young men who are the inaugural Peterson Scholars have been blessed to connect with a great humanitarian who truly loves her alma mater, and Livingstone College is certainly blessed to have her as part of our family.”

The 2011 Peterson Scholars are:

  • Quintin Redfern of Cheektowaga, N.Y., a business administration major with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
  • Mamodu Taylor of Clinton, Md., a history major with a 3.8 GPA
  • Omar Ford-Bey of Chester, Pa., an accounting major who also has a 3.8 GPA.
  • Dorian Edwards of Kinston, N.C., a business administration major with a 3.6 GPA.
