The nonprofit Center for Community Self-Help has given the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Providence Division money to buy two bicycles.

The donation was made in conjunction with a longtime resident of the Grier Height’s community.

A CMPD spokesman said the bicycles will be used to patrol the Grier Heights, which has frequently battled crime.

The spokesman said the bicycles will allow officers to interact with residents on a more personal level.

According to the Self-Help group’s website, the organization operates the Self-Help credit union and was established to promote home ownership and economic development, especially among people of color, women, rural residents and low-wealth families and communities.
