Look who’s packing heat

Groups that were once considered anti-handgun - women, liberals, gays and college kids - are now seeing a surge in gun ownership. Shifting politics and demographics have made it easier and more acceptable than at any time in 75 years for Americans to buy and carry handguns. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, domestic handgun production and imports more than doubled over in four years to 4.6 million in 2009. The surge has been attributed, in part, to post 9/11 fears. (Read more)

Cogdell says he has nothing to hide about C.W. Williams hiring

After coming under fire, Mecklenburg commissioners Chairman Harold Cogdell wants to set the record straight. He welcomes a full investigation into his hiring by the C.W. Williams Community Health Center. Cogdell said he will ask board members of the health clinic to make public how much the nonprofit is paying him. Earlier this year, Cogdell fought to boost the initial $280,000 that the county had considered giving to the clinic. The amount allocated to C.W. Williams was later increased nearly 40 percent to $390,000. Then, in August, C.W. Williams hired Cogdell to do its legal work. “I'm not saying that there was quid pro quo, but it doesn't look good,” Commissioner George Dunlap said. (Read more
