A man who scuffled with employees Monday at the Mecklenburg County Health Department on Beatties Ford Road died at the scene, police said.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the subject’s name pending family notification.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, officers were called to the health department office around 11 a.m. in response to a disturbance. When they arrived, they found the man unresponsive.

Based on initial interviews, police said the man may have gone to the Beatties Ford Road location to receive services. While there, police said, he made his way into an employee work area, where staffers found him going through an employee’s belongings.

Security was called to apprehend the man.

Police said the man showed no visible injuries but was unresponsive when officers arrived.

Homicide detectives are investigating.
