Responding to a call for service Tuesday at 12:05 a.m., Charlotte Mecklenburg Police officers found one man dead from an apparent gunshot wound at Steeplechase Apartments, in the Independence Division. 

According to initial witness statements, the victim and a friend visited the apartment complex to meet an unknown subject. The three allegedly met in the parking lot outside of 7228 Wallace Road and then a gunshot rang out. Witnesses said they came out to investigate and found the victim lying in the parking lot. 

Detectives with the CMPD Homicide Unit are currently following up on leads and canvassing the complex to determine if residents saw or heard anything else.
