Man shot, critically wounded, as New Year's event was ending
A man was shot and critically wounded early Sunday outside an east Charlotte nightclub where revelers had gathered to usher in the new year.
The victim, who was not immediately identified, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in critical/unstable condition.
Police said the shooting happened at 1:58 a.m. in the parking lot of club Backstage in the 8800 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard near Albemarle Road.
An off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who was helping with security at the club told investigators he was attempting to clear the parking lot when they heard several gunshots fired in the area of a crowd. When he made his way to the location, he found a man who had been shot in the head.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
