Marty Cuthbertson is new Crime Stoppers coordinator
Marty Cuthbertson, an officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, has
been named Crime Stoppers coordinator.
He began his new job in September.
During his 25 years on the police force, Cuthbertson has worked in several patrol areas, schools and investigative positions. In his new job, he is responsible for working with the community, the media and the Crime Stoppers board to better generate tips for unsolved crimes.
CMPD also announced plans to increase cash rewards paid out by Crime Stoppers for information relating to unsolved murder cases. Beginning immediately, anyone who offers anonymous tips that lead to an arrest through Crime Stoppers on an unsolved murder case will be eligible for $5,000, up from the traditional $1,000.
In 2009, Crime Stoppers received more than 1,238 anonymous tips. Those tips netted nearly 100 arrests and resulted in $11,760 in reward money paid to the public.
So far this year, tips called in to Crime Stoppers have helped solved the following homicides:
- The double killings of Tia Mitchell and Dominique McGriff in May. Demone Evans, 25, was charged in the case. The tipster received $1,500.
- The killing of Jamal Ibrahim Salih in August. Larry Antwan Perry, 24, was charged in the case. The tipster is eligible for $5,000.
- The killing of Oscar Alvarado Chavez in August. Jonathan Fitzgerald, 18, was charged in the case. The tipster is eligible for $5,000.
