Mayor Foxx's wife resigns county job
Samara Foxx, wife of Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, has resigned from her job at Mecklenburg Department of Social Services, the Charlotte Observer reports.
Samara Foxx, 38, told the paper she stepped down, effective Dec. 31, to “focus more time and energy” on her family. The couple has a 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son.
Mecklenburg DSS came under withering criticism last year when it hired Foxx for the administrative job, which paid $100,000 a year. The job was posted for just a day.
At the time of Samara Foxx’s hiring, her husband was an at-large member of City Council and had announced his plans to run for mayor.
DSS also hired two other relatives of high-ranking government officials last year: the daughter of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Chief Rodney Monroe and the daughter of Superior Court Judge Yvonne Mims Evans.
The three hires led to allegations of cronyism in local government and prompted a change in county hiring policies. All three hires involved African Americans.
