Erica Johnson, communications manager to Mayor Anthony Foxx, has resigned effective Dec. 2.

She informed the mayor of her departure in an email dated Saturday, Oct. 29.

Johnson began working with the mayor in the winter of 2010 to help coordinate events with the media and residents. Her email notice did not state a reason for her leaving, and efforts to reach her were unsuccessful. Johnson had been on medical leave earlier this year but had returned.

Foxx was criticized by some Republicans when he hired Johnson shortly after he was elected in Nov. 2009. Critics accused the mayor of wasting tax dollars at a time when the city, like the rest of the nation, was mired in an economic slump.

In her email to Foxx, Johnson thanked the mayor for a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve you and the citizens of Charlotte as communications manager in the Office of the Mayor,” she wrote.
