MLK holiday events announced
The City of Charlotte MLK Planning Committee announced the following events commemorating the 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Saturday, Jan. 15:
- Organizers will lay a wreath at the MLK statue in Marshall Park at 10 a.m.
- The City of Charlotte will host the annual MLK Holiday Parade. The route will start at 9th and Tryon streets and end at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Tryon streets. (An estimated 3,000 people will attend.)
Monday, Jan. 17:
- The McCrorey Family YMCA will host the annual MLK Prayer Breakfast at the Westin at 7 a.m.
- MLK National Day of Celebration at Halton Theater at Central Piedmont Community College. Winners of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools MLK Art and Writing contests will be awarded scholarships. Former City Council member Susan Burgess, who died June 16 after a three-year battle with colorectal cancer, will be honored posthumously with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Medallion Award. This year's keynote speaker will be former astronaut Joan Higginbotham, the third African American woman to go into space.
