Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a 23-year-old man with murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 6-month-old infant.

The child, London Brantley, died Sunday at Levine Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center.

Police on Saturday arrested Juan Sabastian Vega, 23 (insert), and charged him with felony child abuse. On Sunday they added the charge of murder.

Police said Vega was dating the child’s mother but is not the infant’s father.

Police became aware of the case when medical staff at the hospital called to report what they suspected to be a case of child abuse. Police gave no details about the child’s alleged injuries but said the infant was unresponsive when taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Vega was arrested after police interviewed him and the child’s mother. As of late Sunday he was still being held in the Mecklenburg jail.
