A 41-year-old man was killed in south Charlotte Wednesday evening when he lost control of his moped while trying to avoid a car that turned in front of him.

According to a police report, Marty Wayne Thompson was riding his moped in the 3400 block of Park Road when the driver of a Honda CRV attempted to left turn at the intersection of Park Road and Hampton Gardens Lane. As Thompson attempted to avoid a collision, he fell from his moped and struck the right rear of the Honda.

The moped slid into oncoming traffic and struck a second car.

The driver of the Honda, 26-year-old Lauren Marie Martindale, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield right of way.

No one else involved in the accident was injured.
