Morehouse College will host D.C. events to honor MLK

As the nation prepares to officially unveil the Martin Luther King Jr. national memorial in Washington next week, Morehouse College, King’s alma mater, is preparing a celebrations of its own.

The world-renowned Morehouse College Glee Club has scheduled three performances during the week, including a pre-dedication performance on the National Mall. The 100-year-old choral group also will perform at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library and at Constitution Hall.

The culminating event for the weekend will be a memorial concert and tribute to King at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Hosting the event will be Morehouse alumnus and Academy Award-nominated actor Samuel L. Jackson and his wife, actress LaTanya Richardson Jackson.

The concert will feature “Timeless Voices” Eddie Levert, Dennis Edwards and Johnny Gill. Grammy Award-winner Stevie Wonder and U.S. Rep. John Conyers, (D- Mich.), each will receive the Presidential Renaissance Medallion of Merit for their roles in spearheading efforts to recognize King’s birthday as a national holiday.

JCSU breaks ground on fitness complex

Johnson C. Smith University last week broke ground on a multi-purpose Healthplex Center.

Located in front of the swimming pool area near Brayboy Gymnasium, the center will feature state-of-the-art equipment and a full line of fitness-related services.

Equipment will included: cardiovascular machines, strength & resistance machines, a free weight training area, and a group exercise studio for classes such as yoga, Pilates or dance.

In addition to the physical fitness areas, the center will have two multi-purpose rooms with televisions and computer for educational uses. It also will include a kitchenette for cooking demonstrations.

JCSU is working in partnership with the city of Charlotte and corporate sponsors. The center is scheduled to open in spring 2012.
