NAACP to announce legal action against Wake County schools
The NAACP is expected to announce legal action against the Wake County school system for its new student assignment policy.
An announcement is expected Saturday when national NAACP President Ben Jealous will visit Raleigh, the News & Observer reports.
The Rev. William Barber, president of the state NAACP, was quoted in the N&O as saying the action would challenge the “resegregation" of North Carolina schools.
The Wake County school system, like Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, has moved toward a system that favors sending students to schools closest to their homes. Critics say the new school-assignment plans are tantamount to resegregation.
In preparation for legal action against the school system, Barber said a team of lawyers was convened from the N.C. Justice Center, the NAACP, the UNC Center for Civil Rights, the Southern Coalition for Social Justice and Legal Aid of North Carolina.
The Washington Post, in a series of stories examining the U.S. Supreme Court’s first five years under Chief Justice John Roberts, noted Sunday that school systems nationwide are moving back to neighborhood-based assignment plans.
In Wake County, Barber and other opponents have been jailed while protesting the school district's moves.
