No charges will be filed in the death of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced today.

Henry, 26, was pronounced dead Dec. 17, a day after he either fell or jumped from the back of a pickup truck driven by his fiancé, Charlotte resident Loleini Tonga, during a domestic dispute. Henry was in Charlotte visiting Tonga while on injured reserved with a broken arm.

CMPD’s accident reconstruction unit found no evidence of reckless driving or excessive speed by Tonga, the department announced today. The speed limit on Oakdale Road where the incident occurred is 35 mph, and the estimated speed at the time of accident was between 19-23 mph, CMPD said.

Homicide detectives said Tonga was cooperative throughout the investigation and that her statement was consistent with witness accounts. However, no witness reported actually seeing Henry came out of the back of the truck.

One witness told police that Henry had jumped into the back of the truck and began beating on the back of the vehicle as Tonga drove away from her residence.

The medical examiner ruled Henry’s death an accident, the cause being blunt force trauma to the head from a fall.
