Superior Court Judge Yvonne Mims Evans is being praised on the Internet for her zero-tolerance policy for crimes against children.

On Tuesday, Evans rejected a plea deal that would have sent a former Ranson Middle School teacher to prison for 12-15 years for having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Ernest Nichols, 45, who had been charged with 19 felonies, pleaded guilty to three counts of statutory rape in the plea bargain. Evans said the plea deal wasn’t harsh enough.

The sex crimes occurred at Nichols' home over a six-month-period from late 2008 until April or May 2009. The victim, reportedly, was the girlfriend of Nichols' son.

QUESTION: Was Evan right to reject the plea agreement, or is 12-15 years enough for the crimes committed?
