President Obama releases his birth certificate
President Obama today released a detailed copy of his Hawaiian birth certificate – an apparent response to the persistent “birther” movement that questioned his legitimacy to hold office.
"We do not have time for this kind of silliness," he told reporters moments later at the White House.
Obama said it’s now time to move on to bigger issues, such as addressing the federal budget and growing the economy.
"This issue has been going on for two, two and a half years now. I think it started during the campaign," Obama said. "I have watched with bemusement, I've been puzzled at the degree at which this thing just kept on going…We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers."
In recent weeks, potential presidential candidate Donald Trump has joined others such as Sarah Palin in calling on the president to prove that he was born in the United States and thus eligible to be president under the U.S. Constitution.
The newly released certificate ( download a .pdf copy) says Barack Hussein Obama II was born at 7:24 p.m. on Aug. 4, 1961, at Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital, within the city limits of Honolulu. It is signed by the delivery doctor, Obama's mother and the local registrar. His American-born, Caucasian mother was 18. It says his father, 25, was African and born in Kenya.
The certificate makes no mention of Obama’s religion.
