Obama, the first billion-dollar candidate?
President Obama raised and spent $750 million to win the White House in 2008. Will he top $1 billion in 2012?
A Washington Post story raises just that possibility.
"It's not unrealistic at all, given the amount raised and spent in 2008 and the amount Republican interest groups and 527s will spend against him," the paper quoted a former Obama administration official as saying.
The Obama cash machine shattered all previous records in ’08 after he became the first person to opt out of the public financing system established after the Watergate scandal. Much of that money came over the Internet in small donations from individuals excited about Obama’s history-making candidacy.
