AP source: Obama will name Mel Watt to housing post
Rep. Mel Watt is set to become the second Charlotte-based politician named to a key federal post this week by President Barack Obama, according to the Associated Press.
The AP reported Tuesday that Obama will name the District 12 congressman to head the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the government regulator that oversees lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The A.P. quoted an unnamed White House source.
The nomination may come as early as Wednesday, the news agency reported.
On Monday, the president nominating Mayor Anthony Foxx to the position of Secretary of Transportation.
If confirmed by the Senate, Watt, a Democrat and 20-year veteran of the House, would replace Edward DeMarco, an appointee of President George W. Bush.
Watt’s appointment also may change the calculus for local politics. With the 12th district suddenly open, some local pols who might have been eyeing Foxx’s office at the Mecklenburg Government Center my now reconsider with a shot at grabbing a seat in Congress.
