Sheriff's officer who shot at hit-and-run car is ordered to court
An off-duty Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office detention officer has been ordered to appear in court over allegations that he fired on a vehicle that rear-ended his car Monday morning on Freedom Drive.
The officer, Terry McConico, also was charged with an infraction alleging that he violated the state’s concealed carry weapons law by failing to disclose that he had a valid gun permit when approached by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.
The wreck was reported just after 9:45. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokesman Officer Robert Fey said multiple people called 911 to report shots being fired at the scene.
According to police, McConico, who has been with the sheriff's office for 13 years, was riding in a sedan driven by his wife when a light-colored SUV rear-ended their vehicle. As the SUV drove away, police say, McConico got out of his car and chased after it. He fired his personal weapon at least twice, Fey said.
The SUV was later found unoccupied at Marshall Acres Drive and Barry Oaks Circle, off the 8300 block of Wilkinson Boulevard. It was a rental and had been reported stolen.
Fey said investigators were unsure whether any of McConico’s shots hit the SUV or any of its occupants.
In addition to CMPD, the sheriff's department also is investigating. The outcome of those investigations may determine whether McConico will keep his job.
