Ones are done
Thursday was day of a day of upsets at the CIAA. Both No. 1 seeds went home in
defeat.
First, Winston-Salem State, the No. 1 seed in the Southern Division, fell to fifth-seeded Fayetteville State 66-63. The game was won on a 3-point shot by Sidney Evans with six seconds remaining on the game clock.
The FSU Broncos proved that three’s a charm as they kept the WSSU Rams from defeating them for the third time this season.
The nightcap game wasn’t as dramatic, but the outcome saw No. 4 seed and hometown favorite Johnson C. Smith University defeat Northern Division No. 1 Bowie State 82–66. The first half ended with the Golden Bulls up 42-39. The second half was no contest at all, with JCSU at one point putting together a 22-6 scoring run that signaled coach Stephen Joyner’s team meant business.
The South Rises
The Thursday day games proved that, for this year, the strength of the CIAA lies in it’s Southern division, as Shaw University routed northern division opponent Elizabeth City State University 71-48. With a 35-13 halftime blowout lead, the game was all but over before it started.
Livingstone College continued the Southern charm theme as they pulled an upset by defeating the Northern Division’s Virginia Union in a 59-58 nail biter. The game was sealed on two free throws by Trone Jackson with 10 seconds left in the game.
