Police are investigating a late-night shooting in west Charlotte that left a man dead outside the Lamplighter Inn on Eddleman Road.

The victim’s name was not released, pending notification of relatives.

Police were called to the location in the 4400 block of Eddleman around 12:03 a.m. Wednesday to investigate a shooting outside of a second-floor room at the motel. When officers arrived they found a black man lying on the walkway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Based on initial witness statements to police, the victim was involved arguing with another man before he was shot. Police said the shooter is cooperating with homicide detectives.

A firearm was recovered underneath the second-story walkway. Police said the shooting did not appear to be a random act.

Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS to speak with a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
