Phillip O. Berry student struck by car, seriously injured
A student who attends Philip O. Berry Academy of Technology suffered life-threatening injuries Monday when she was struck by a car while walking along Tuckaseegee Road in west Charlotte.
Authorities did not disclose the student’s name.
Police said the incident happened at 8:25 a.m. while a female student was walking in 4400 block on the Interstate-85 overpass.
She was taken to Carolinas medical center.
The driver, Ivory Teanna Gabriel-Brown, stopped and waited for police to arrive and was said to be cooperating in the investigation.
Based on the initial reports, police said, the student was walking along Tuckaseegee Road over I-85. The vehicle, a 1996 Mitsubishi Galant, was traveling in the right lane heading toward Edgewood Road. Police said the student apparently stepped into the roadway and Gabriel-Brown was unable to avoid hitting her.
Police said Gabriel-Brown was not texting and was not on the phone at the time of the collision, and at this time she faces no criminal charges.
