Good morning! It’s going to be a hot weekend in the Qcity. Today, the weatherman is calling for sunshine followed by isolated afternoon thunderstorms with highs in the mid 90s. A stray thunderstorm is possible through the evening. Saturday we should see mostly sunny skies with a high of 94°. Sunday expect plenty of sun with highs remaining in the mid 90s and lows in the low 70s.

Here’s what’s brewing in the news:

Happy to be Nappy

Pi Nappa Kappa is on a mission to “To educate, inspire and uplift natural hair women, men, boys and girls throughout the entire world. To make the word 'nappy' into a 'happy' and celebrated term.”

The natural hair sorority sprung up on Facebook in 2010, and since then a little over 700 people have signed the group's official pledge, according to the group’s Facebook page.

The group’s initiation process involves signing a pledge that reads: "I will Pledge to be a Pi Nappa Kappa Natural Hair Soror but only if 10,000 other natural hair people will do the same." (Full pledge

The pledge reads that founder Leola Anifowoshe is about 9,300 members short of her 10,000 goal which she hopes to achieve by Dec. 9, 2011.

Reactions to the group have been mixed.

“I’m sure the sorority means no disrespect to official Greek life and initiation,” writes Krystal Holmes in an article for Clutch Magazine. “But doing everything via Facebook takes away from the experience of pledging in my opinion.”

"My hair is not that much a part of my identity," a commentor - who says they woudn't join - wrote in response to Holmes' article. "It just grows out of my head and I see it as an accessory and head warmer rather than a social or political statement."

“To me the whole concept is a play on stupid,” writes Yesha Callahan on her blog flyblackchic.com. Upon learning of the sorority, Callahan says she “couldn’t help but to literally Laugh Out Loud.”

But the Pi Nappa Kappa Facebook fan page wall shows that nearly three thousand men and women have embraced the untraditional sorority - which received a big boost after being mentioned on the Michael Baisden Show.
