Police arrest 3 in motel slaying
Police late Sunday arrested three people – two men and a woman – and charged them with killing a man at a north Charlotte motel and seriously wounding another.
Arrested were Wendell Lemaitre, 33, Lauren English, 18, and Damien Bond, 30.
In addition to murder charges, the three also face charges of attempted murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and firearms violations.
Police identified the murder victim as Keith Cox, 43. Another man, Clayton King, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in serious condition.
The shooting occurred at about 1:37 a.m. Sunday inside the Budget Inn on North Graham Street at I-85.
According to the Charlotte Observer, Cox was visiting Charlotte from New York and may have gone to the motel to meet some females. He worked as a concession stand operator for concerts.
Members of his family told NewsChannel 36 that Cox may have been lured to the motel and targeted for robbery.
When officers arrived on scene, they found Cox lying in a hallway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police they saw two black males running across the parking lot and get into a black or dark-colored Toyota Camry. Police spotted a car matching that description a few miles away, and began chasing it. The car crashed at the corner of Harris Boulevard and Old Statesville Road, where officers took three people into custody.
They were formally charged with the crimes late Sunday afternoon.
