Police arrest 3 in student shooting
Police have arrested and charged three men in connection with the Wednesday afternoon incident in which a 15-year-old girl walking home from school was shot in the leg.
Charged with assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting serious injury are: Jonathan Daniel Reyes, 17; Gabriel Cisneros, 19; and Daniel Hernandez Jiminez, 20.
Police said the incident appears to have been gang related.
The student, who attends East Mecklenburg High School, was treaded and released. Police did not release the victim’s name because she is a minor.
According to initial witness statements, the girl was one of many East Meck students walking home along Conference Drive near BJ’s Warehouse Club on Independence Boulevard when they came upon a group of men arguing in a parking lot near a Wachovia ATM.
Police say the argument escalated into a physical fight and one of the men went to a car, a gray Nissan Altima, and returned with a gun. The gunman fired several shots, police said, one of which struck the student.
No other bystanders were injured.
Police said they also recovered the car, which was being processed for evidence.
