Police: Teen shot by officer had a knife
Calling it a “very unfortunate incident, “ Charlotte-Mecklenburg police released new details of last week’s police shooting of 15-year-old boy whose mother had just been stabbed during a domestic dispute.
According to a police statement Monday, officer Matthew R. Wilson of the North Division shot Jeffrey after the boy, who appeared “very agitated” walked toward the officer holding a large knife and did not drop it when commanded to.
Police said the boy had nothing to do with his mother’s attack.
Police later arrested 39-year-old Bruce Jenkins and charged him with stabbing the boy’s mother, Valinda Streater.
Police said “multiple” bullets struck the teen, who was listed in stable condition at Carolinas Medical Center.
“This is a very unfortunate incident and our thoughts remain with the young man and his family as well as Officer Wilson and his family,” the department said in statement.
In an interview with WCNC TV reporter Glenn County, Streater said she begged the officer not to shoot her son.
"I screamed, 'That is my child. Do not shoot him,'" she said.
The CMPD statement said the officer was in fear for his life when he shot the boy.
The shooting happened in the 4400 block of Brandie Glen Drive, just south of West W.T Harris Boulevard in north Charlotte. Police were called to the area around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate a report that a woman had been stabbed.
As officers arrived, the woman met them outside and said she feared that her attacker was still inside the house. The officers called paramedics and continued to question the woman, according to police.
As officers began walking toward the place where the stabbing happened, they were approached by “a couple of subjects in the roadway,” a CMPD statement said. Officers saw that one of the subjects, later identified Jeffrey Green, was holding what police initially described as "a shiny object."
“Officers began giving verbal commands to the subject to drop the object,” the report stated. “As the subject continued to approach in the officer’s direction, the officer discharged his weapon.”
After he was shot, Green ran from the scene and was found behind a nearby home. During a search of the area police said they found a 12-inch knife in the grass near the area where the shooting occurred.
Police on Monday said they had interviewed several witnesses but had not had a chance to talk with the teen.
The officer involved in this incident has been identified as Matthew R. Wilson. He is assigned to the North Division and was hired on January 28, 2008. Officer Wilson was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure whenever an officer is involved in a shooting. CMPD said its Internal Affairs Division continues to investigate.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective, or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
