Police called to overnight killing in uptown Charlotte
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating an overnight homicide that happened in uptown Charlotte near Gateway Village and Johnson & Wales University.
Police did not immediately release the victim’s name pending notification of family members.
The killing – a rare event in uptown Charlotte -- occurred about 2:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of Cates Street, just across the street from Elmwood Cemetery and some two blocks from W. Trade Street.
A witness told police he heard gunfire and looked out his window and saw a man standing over the victim. The witness said the subject was gone by the time he got downstairs to check on the victim.
Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound.
