Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged a 34-year-old man with shooting a 2-year-old boy outside an east Charlotte home Thursday night.

Alvin Alexander is in jail on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflicting serious injury.

Police say the boy was in a stroller and was not the intended target. The victim’s name was not released.

Witnesses told police the shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. in the 5800 block of Eastbrook Road, in the Hampshire Hills neighborhood between The Plaza and Old Concord Road, where two groups of people had been arguing.

The boy's caretaker managed to avoid the gunfire. The child was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition.

Neighbors told the Charlotte Observer they heard six or seven gunshots.

Although the shooting was first reported as a drive-by, police said they didn't know whether the shots came from a car or someone standing near a car.
