Police have identified a man suspected of rape and robbery after two women last week reported being assaulted after their cars, in separate incidents, were rammed at Charlotte intersections.

The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team spent Saturday looking for 29-year-old Jaunton Gregory Carter. Police late Friday signed warrants alleging his involvement in hit and run, rape, kidnapping and robbery.

CMPD is asking anyone with knowledge of Carter’s whereabouts to call 704-336-VCAT or dial 911.

Police said the crimes happened in Dilworth and Myers Park, and CMPD has urged drivers to use caution if involved in accidents, especially if they occur at night or in isolated location.

In the first reported case, two women told police they were driving home around 2 a.m. when their car was struck from behind at the intersection of Runnymeade and Colony Roads. One of the women got out of her car to check for damage when she was confronted by a man with a handgun who demanded money.

The women said they told the attacker had no money, and the suspect forces them to drive to an ATM, where they were unable to withdraw cash. The women told police the suspect then forced them to drive to the 3000 block of Ferncliff Road, where he raped the driver and fondled the passenger.

The second attack occurred about a half hour later in the 700 block of McDonald Avenue. In that incident, a lone female told police she was driving home when her car was struck from behind. When she got out to check for damage, a man with a gun demanded cash. The victim complied and the suspect left.

The victims described their attacker as a dark-skinned black male, 5-feet-10, thin build with a goatee. He was last seen wearing a black hoody. His vehicle was described as a small dark-colored car.

Police said the attacker might have been following women as they left bars and nightclubs.

Carter has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1997, when he was 17, the Charlotte Observer reported, citing a check of North Carolina criminal records. He’s awaiting trial on two charges -- resisting a public officer and possession of marijuana.

He has been convicted of robbery eight times, the newspaper said.
